Chief Ship Surveyor’s Keynote: Strengthening India’s Technical Foundation for Global Shipbuilding Leadership

At Samarthya 2026 – An INA–DGS Conclave on Capability, Confidence and Competitiveness in Shipbuilding, Shri Pradeep Sudhakar, Chief Ship Surveyor & Joint DG (Tech.), Directorate General of Shipping, delivered a focused keynote on India’s technical pathway to becoming a major global shipbuilding nation.

He emphasised that India’s shipbuilding growth must be anchored in strong regulatory frameworks, rigorous quality standards, and modern engineering systems. Highlighting the critical role of Naval Architecture and technical governance, he stressed that globally competitive shipbuilding requires predictable regulations, harmonised oversight, and high-quality compliance across every stage—from design approvals to construction, testing, and certification.

His address underscored India’s commitment to strengthening its shipbuilding ecosystem under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aim to position India among the top shipbuilding nations in the world. He highlighted ongoing reforms including digitalisation through the Comprehensive Shipbuilding Portal, enhanced surveyor capacity, and the implementation of schemes such as the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS) and the Shipcycling Credit Note, designed to improve competitiveness, indigenisation, and yard viability.

He also stressed the need for modern technologies—digital ship design, green propulsion, material innovation, and smarter production systems—to build an Atmanirbhar, future-ready, and globally trusted shipbuilding sector. With India’s growing workforce, expanding yard capabilities, and evolving policy ecosystem, he reaffirmed that the Directorate is committed to enabling a high-quality, technically robust, and internationally compliant shipbuilding framework.

This keynote reaffirmed India’s resolve to advance from capability-building to global shipbuilding leadership, driven by engineering excellence and institutional strengthening.
