About Us

The Coordination Branch of the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) plays an important role in supporting effective coordination, communication and institutional collaboration across the Directorate and with stakeholders in the maritime sector.

India's maritime sector brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including seafarers, maritime training institutions, shipping companies, Recognised Organisations, maritime associations, ports, Government authorities, educational institutions and other organisations connected with shipping and maritime activities. The Coordination Branch supports DGMA in maintaining a coordinated and responsive approach while dealing with matters that involve multiple areas of maritime administration.

The Coordination Branch

The Branch serves as a facilitating link among the various Wings and Branches of DGMA and supports the exchange and consolidation of information on matters of common or institutional importance. Through effective coordination, it contributes towards timely communication, greater consistency and an integrated approach to the implementation of DGMA's programmes, initiatives and priorities.

Our Role

The Coordination Branch primarily facilitates coordination on matters that require the involvement of more than one Wing or Branch of DGMA. It supports institutional communication and helps bring together relevant inputs from different functional areas so that matters of common importance can be considered in a coordinated manner.

The Branch also supports DGMA in maintaining effective communication with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, as well as with other Government authorities and maritime stakeholders, wherever coordination at the institutional level is required.

Its role is facilitative in nature, while the respective technical, statutory, regulatory and administrative matters continue to be handled by the concerned functional Wings and Branches of DGMA.

Supporting a Coordinated Maritime Administration

Modern maritime administration covers a wide range of areas including seafarer welfare, maritime training and certification, shipping development, maritime safety, technical matters, regulatory compliance, digital governance and other sectoral initiatives.

Many of these areas are interconnected and may require participation from different parts of the Directorate. The Coordination Branch supports a whole-of-DGMA approach by facilitating communication and cooperation among the concerned Wings and Branches.

This helps DGMA maintain better institutional alignment while addressing issues and initiatives that have wider relevance to the maritime community.

Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination

The maritime sector functions through close cooperation among Government authorities, seafarers, industry, training institutions and other maritime organisations.

The Coordination Branch facilitates institutional-level engagement and coordination with stakeholders, wherever required, to support the effective exchange of information and implementation of initiatives of wider maritime significance.

Such engagement helps DGMA understand sectoral developments, facilitate communication among relevant stakeholders and support collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening India's maritime ecosystem.

The Branch seeks to promote constructive engagement with stakeholders while ensuring that matters relating to specific technical or regulatory areas are addressed by the appropriate functional Wing or Branch of DGMA.

Coordination of Maritime Initiatives

DGMA undertakes various initiatives aimed at strengthening maritime administration, supporting seafarers, promoting professional development and enhancing the overall maritime ecosystem.

Where such initiatives involve multiple Wings, Branches or external stakeholders, the Coordination Branch supports their effective coordination and institutional convergence.

The Branch facilitates collaboration among the concerned stakeholders and contributes towards ensuring that important initiatives are communicated and implemented through a coordinated approach.

Review and Institutional Coordination

The Coordination Branch supports DGMA in the periodic review of important programmes, initiatives and matters involving different areas of the Directorate.

By facilitating the exchange of relevant information among concerned Wings and Branches, the Branch helps maintain a comprehensive institutional perspective on important maritime matters.

This enables DGMA to strengthen coordination, improve communication and support timely implementation of its organisational priorities.

Information and Reporting

The Coordination Branch also supports the compilation and coordination of institutional information relating to the activities and initiatives of DGMA.

It facilitates inputs from various Wings and Branches for important reports, publications and institutional communications that provide an overview of the work undertaken by the Directorate.

Through such coordinated information-sharing, the Branch contributes towards greater awareness of DGMA's activities among Government authorities, maritime stakeholders and the wider maritime community.

Working with the Maritime Community

The effectiveness of maritime administration depends upon meaningful cooperation among all stakeholders. The Coordination Branch therefore supports DGMA's engagement with the wider maritime community, including:

  • Seafarers and maritime professionals
  • Shipping companies and maritime employers
  • Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) and educational institutions
  • Ports and port-related organisations
  • Maritime associations and professional bodies
  • Recognised Organisations and other maritime entities
  • Government Ministries, Departments and allied authorities
  • Other stakeholders contributing to India's maritime sector

Through such coordination, DGMA seeks to promote effective communication and collaboration across the maritime ecosystem.

Our Commitment

The Coordination Branch is committed to supporting a maritime administration that is coordinated, responsive, transparent and stakeholder-oriented.

Its efforts are directed towards strengthening institutional collaboration, facilitating effective communication and supporting the smooth coordination of matters that have relevance across different areas of maritime administration.

Through continued engagement and cooperation with seafarers and maritime stakeholders, the Branch contributes to DGMA's broader objective of fostering a safe, efficient, inclusive, progressive and globally competitive maritime sector in India.

Moving Forward

As India's maritime sector continues to expand and evolve, effective coordination among Government, industry, seafarers, training institutions and other stakeholders will remain increasingly important.

The Coordination Branch will continue to support DGMA in strengthening institutional coordination, stakeholder engagement and collaborative maritime governance, while facilitating the effective implementation of initiatives that contribute to the growth and development of India's maritime sector.
