MARITIME TRAINING TRUST
BRIEF
1. Formation of MTT
MoS, GoI vide Gazette Notification no. S.O. 1436(E) dated 30.12.04 in pursuance of Section 115VU of the Income Tax Act, 1961, notified the guidelines for providing training by Shipping Companies opting for Tonnage Tax scheme under Chapter XII-G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. As per clause 1(b) of the said Notification, the Maritime Training Trust was settled by Director General of Shipping in consultation with Indian National Ship Owners Association in the year 2004.
2. Main Object of the MTT
- To encourage Indian citizens to take to sea
- To provide all necessary facilities for training Indian seafarers, by offering necessary incentives, employment avenues and or opportunities — in India or abroad so that India can become a leading supplier of maritime manpower to the world shipping.
3. MTT Activities
MTR Compliance Certificate
MTT scrutinising the tonnage tax returns submitted by the tonnage tax opted companies for issuance of Minimum Training Requirement (MTR) Compliance certificate by the DGS for availing the tonnage tax benefit.
INDOS Activities
INDOS activities has been merged with MTT and accordingly MTT is making corrections in Seafarer profile related to change of name / photo / signature / passport updation, etc.
4. Spending on the Objects of the Trust
To give wings to the minds of young and bright cadets who are going to be pillars of maritime industry, MTT is funding the following projects to spend on the objects of the Trust:
E-Learning
MTT is funding towards maintenance of E-Learning Course Content platform for CoC as well as STCW Modular Courses. This project has been outsourced to M/s ADU Academy, Chennai.
Financial Support to Woman Seafarer
Since FY 2014-15, MTT is providing financial support to Women seafaring students who are undergoing pre-sea course at DGS approved Maritime Training Institutes. Initially, MTT was giving scholarship ₹50,000/- per woman / per academic year, which was increased to ₹1,00,000/- per woman / per academic year since year 2019-20. MTT started with 47 girls' candidate and now the number has gone beyond 1100.
Centralised Attendance System (CAS)
In order to streamline the procedure with regard to attendance in the DGS approved maritime training institutes for students as well as for faculty, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) has developed Centralised Attendance System module and MTT is funding the same.
Sponsorship for MSc in Maritime Affairs at WMU, London
MTT is sponsoring two Indian seafarers for higher studies for doing MSc in Maritime Affairs at WMU, London every year starting from FY 2022-23.
English Communication & Soft Skill Course
To enhance English proficiency of Faculty/Instructors and improve their inter-personal communication skills with the seafarers, Online Course on English Communication & Soft Skill (EC&SS) developed for Faculty & Instructors for DG approved Maritime Training Institutes (MTI).
Naughtica
This Event is to try and get aspiring Mariners, Cadets & Technical Students to be a part of a large inter college fest with participation from all corners of India through technical Contests mixed with Sports and Entertainment.
Seafarers Enhancement Program (SEP)
A two day non-residential program for seafarer, particularly Ratings, to enhance technical as well as soft skills in order to meet the changing technology and expectations from the employers.
