World Environment Day 2026: Plantation Initiatives by MMD Chennai & Subordinate Offices

In continuation of the Government of India initiative “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” and pursuant to the call given by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), it is submitted that plantation drives were successfully undertaken on 05.06.2026 (World Environment Day) by MMD, Chennai and its subordinate offices under the jurisdiction.

At Chennai, the plantation drive was organised at Seafarers Club, Chennai by the MMD, Chennai with active participation of officers, staff, stakeholders, seafarers and family members of seafarers. Approximately 100 participants took part in the programme. During the event, around 120 saplings of native species were planted within the premises of Seafarers Club, Chennai. Further, around 350 saplings were distributed to officers, staff, stakeholders, seafarers and their family members for undertaking plantation on an individual basis.

Simultaneously, plantation drives under the campaign were also undertaken at MMD, Tuticorin and MMD, Visakhapatnam. At MMD, Visakhapatnam, plantation activity was conducted on 05.06.2026 with active participation of officers and staff, wherein saplings were planted within office premises as part of sustained environmental conservation efforts. The office has further initiated action for plantation within office premises, staff quarters and other available land under its control, including stakeholder outreach for encouraging plantation activities. Similarly, MMD, Tuticorin also undertook plantation activities as part of the campaign with participation of officers and staff within its jurisdiction.

The plantation drives witnessed enthusiastic participation towards environmental sustainability and the objectives of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.
