Training of Trainers (TOT) Programme on Mental Health Well Being in Chennai

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), in collaboration with the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), organised a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme on Mental Health and Well-being at the Seafarers Club, Chennai, from 31st August 2026 to 2nd September 2026, wherein the faculty from various Maritime Training Institutes in and around Chennai district had participated.

Inaugural Session:

Capt. Anish Joseph, Principal Officer-cum-Jt. DG [Tech] (i/c), MMD Chennai, attended the inaugural ceremony on 31.08.2026 as the Chief Guest and shared his thoughts on the programme, along with other distinguished speakers- Capt. Savio Ramos, General Secretary, Maritime Union of India, Mr. T. Narendra Rao, Vice-President, Forward Seamen’s Union of India, Dr. Syed Asif Altaf, ITF Wellbeing Program Coordinator.

          About the Programme:

            The programme was aimed at imparting knowledge and awareness regarding the understanding, early management and coping with stress among the participants. As the participants were faculty members from various MTIs, the programme was designed to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to incorporate stress management and mental health awareness into their teaching sessions, thereby creating greater awareness among seafarers. The programme comprised interactive and engaging activities, including quizzes, group discussions and various physical activities, conducted by a three-member team from ITF comprising Dr. Syed Asif Altaf, Dr. Kusum Kanwar and Ms. Lisa Hazarika.

The sessions covered a wide range of topics relevant to the mental health and well-being of seafarers, including:

  1. Understanding stress and its impact on mental health;
  2. Management of stress and effective coping strategies;
  3. Time management and related strategies;
  4. Sleep hygiene practices;
  5. Maintaining healthy family relationships;
  6. Multicultural competence and its importance in the maritime environment;
  7. Mind relaxation and stress-relief techniques;
  8. Understanding different forms of harassment and bullying;
  9. Identifying symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts; and
  10. Providing psychological first aid to persons experiencing mental health difficulties.

On the second day of the programme, Capt. Anish Joseph, Principal Officer-cum-Jt. DG [Tech] (i/c), MMD Chennai, visited the venue and interacted with the participants. He sought feedback from the participants regarding the sessions and activities and also highlighted the importance of maintaining good mental health and well-being among seafarers.

         Closing Session:

The closing session of the programme was held on 2nd September 2026, during which certificates were distributed to the participating faculty members.

The closing session was attended by Shri Binish Chandra Varma, Deputy Director, Seamen’s Employment Office, Chennai, who shared his remarks on the importance of stress management and mental health well-being among seafarers. He appreciated the initiative undertaken by ITF and expressed his hope that more such programmes would be organised in the future to enhance awareness regarding mental health and stress management among the seafaring community.

The programme concluded with a commitment to further promote awareness and understanding of mental health and well-being among seafarers through appropriate training from the graduation level and also by pledging to Sagar mei Samman and Sagar mei Yog.
