Independence Day Celebrations at Mercantile Marine Department, Chennai

The Mercantile Marine Department, Chennai celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at its premises at Anchorgate Building, Rajaji Salai. The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Capt. Anish Joseph, Principal Officer-cum-Jt.DG (Tech) (I/c), in the presence of officers and staff of the Department, their families, and pre sea cadets of MTI's, who formed the ceremonial guard for the occasion.
 

The National Flag was unfurled to the strains of the National Anthem, with the assembled gathering, including cadets in ceremonial uniform, offering the salute. The premises wore a festive look, adorned with tricolour bunting and decorations put up by the staff.

Addressing the gathering, the Principal Officer conveyed Independence Day greetings and reflected on the role of the maritime administration in the nation's growth story. He recalled the contribution of Indian seafarers to global trade and called upon the young cadets present to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity as they prepare to join the merchant marine, reminding them that they would carry the Indian flag to ports across the world.
 

As part of the celebrations, the Principal Officer felicitated cadets and presented them with copies of the commemorative volume "Directorate General of Shipping, Celebrating 75 Years of Legacy" and commemorative mementoes released on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of the Directorate. He also interacted with the cadets, responding to their questions on careers at sea and the work of the maritime administration.
 

The celebrations concluded with a group photograph of officers, staff, families, and cadets, followed by cultural programmes, competitions for children, and distribution of refreshments to commemorate the occasion. The Department reaffirmed its commitment to the service of the nation and to the maritime community on this occasion.
