India–Cyprus Maritime Engagement Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation in the Shipping Sector Limassol, Cyprus | 28–30 September 2026

An Indian maritime delegation undertook a series of strategic engagements in the Republic of Cyprus from 28 to 30 September 2026 to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation, promote investment opportunities in India, and explore collaboration across the shipping and allied sectors. The engagements included meetings with the High Commission of India in Cyprus, Fleet Management Limited (FML), the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus, and key maritime stakeholders, including MSC, DP World, Eurogate and representatives of the Cypriot shipping and financial sectors. The delegation also participated in the launch-related engagement of MEDCONNECT, a Mediterranean initiative focused on sustainable maritime innovation and ocean and coastal ecosystem restoration. During the discussions, the Indian delegation showcased opportunities in India's maritime sector, including shipbuilding, ship repair, ship recycling, port development, cruise tourism, maritime training, ship leasing and greenfield investments. Cypriot shipping companies and investors were encouraged to explore opportunities for establishing and expanding their presence in India. A key area of discussion was the employment and welfare of Indian seafarers. The delegation highlighted India's contribution to the global maritime workforce and explored opportunities to increase the deployment of qualified Indian seafarers on Cyprus-managed vessels. Discussions also covered maritime education, training, seafarer welfare, safety standards and cooperation on emerging maritime technologies. The delegation also examined the differences between the Indian and Cypriot Tonnage Tax Schemes, with a view to understanding their respective frameworks and identifying potential areas for further study. Cooperation on maritime matters at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and opportunities for maritime finance and ship leasing through GIFT City were also discussed. Visits and engagements at Limassol Port provided insights into port operations, container terminal management, cruise and multipurpose terminal activities, passenger processing and shore-to-ship power solutions. Discussions with Eurogate also explored potential opportunities for an expanded presence in India and possible linkages with Indian ports. The engagement further explored opportunities for India–Cyprus cooperation in sustainable shipping, green ports, maritime research, ship recycling and coastal resilience through knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration. As a follow-up to the discussions, both sides will explore the identified areas of cooperation and coordinate further engagements with relevant stakeholders. Preparations will also be undertaken for the proposed visit of the Shipping Deputy Minister of the Republic of Cyprus, accompanied by a business delegation, to India in November 2026. The engagements reaffirmed the shared interest of India and Cyprus in strengthening maritime cooperation, facilitating investment, and developing mutually beneficial partnerships across the maritime value chain.
