Maritime Research Center Seminar on Underwater Domain Awareness

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) participated in the National Seminar on “Advancing Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) Framework for India’s MAHASAGAR Vision and its Realization”, organised by the Maritime Research Center (MRC), Pune, in collaboration with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), New Delhi, on 17–18 August 2026 at Pune.

The Directorate was represented by Shri Pravin Roy, Engineer & Ship Surveyor-cum-DDG (Tech) and Shri Devarshi Datta, SEEED Consultant (Engineering).

The two-day seminar brought together experts and stakeholders from the maritime, defence, scientific, policy and academic communities to deliberate on strengthening Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) as an important enabler of India’s MAHASAGAR Vision, integrating the dimensions of Maritime Security, Blue Economy, Marine Environment & Disaster Management and Science & Technology.

The deliberations covered a wide range of areas relevant to the maritime sector, including Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), sediment management and navigational safety, biofouling and anthropogenic underwater noise, blue accounting and marine environmental economics, sustainable fisheries, modelling & simulation and capacity building.

During the seminar, Shri Pravin Roy delivered a brief presentation on the IMO-led GloNoise initiative, highlighting India’s role in addressing underwater radiated noise from shipping and also provided an overview of the upcoming National Maritime Decarbonization Policy (NMDP) Framework.

DGMA’s participation reflects its continued engagement towards strengthening safe, sustainable and technology-driven maritime governance, while fostering greater convergence between policy, science, technology and environmental sustainability in India’s maritime domain.
